The DPCGC, which was formed under Rule 12 of the Information Technology Regulation 2021 (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Code of Ethics for Digital Media), aims to empower consumers to make choices enlightened viewing, according to an official statement.
As for its membership, it will include an OCCP OCCP Editors Council as members and an Independent Grievance Board (GRB) – consisting of a chair and six members.
It will be chaired by a retired Supreme Court and High Court judge and its members will include executives from the media and entertainment industry as well as experts from various fields including children’s rights, minority rights and media law.
In addition, GRB will oversee and ensure compliance with the Code of Ethics by OCCP Board Members, provide advice on the Code of Ethics and address unresolved grievances within 15 days and hear grievances / appeals filed by the complainant (s), the statement added.
So far, IAMAI said it has received confirmation from 10 publishers, including Alt Balaji, Amazon Prime Video, Arha Media, Firework, Hoichoi, Hungama, Lionsgate Play, MX Player, Netflix and Shemaroo.
“IAMAI and DPCGC members are deeply committed to protecting consumer rights and empowering consumers to make informed decisions, as well as to have their grievances addressed. The formation of this body is an important step towards consumer choice as more and more people view content online, ”said Subho Ray, President of the Internet and Mobile Association of India.
IAMAI said it has informed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that it is in the process of forming the DPCGC and also shared the list of editors who have confirmed to be members of the Council. According to the New Delhi-based group, the formation of DPCGC is a “significant step” in ensuring that OCC publishers comply with 2021 IT rules.
“The Digital Publishers Content Complaints Council will serve as a transparent and open channel to effectively address consumer complaints. As part of the compliance process, this newly formed body is an important step towards consumer empowerment and choice, ”he said.
