Toho Cinemas Under Antimonopoly Investigation

Tokyo, March 4 (Jiji Press)–The Japan Fair Trade Commission is investigating Toho Cinemas Ltd. for allegedly pressuring movie studios in violation of antimonopoly law, sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Toho Cinemas has urged movie studios to prioritize it over rival movie theater chains in movie distribution and not distribute movies to rivals, according to the people.

Additionally, Toho Cinemas has threatened to sever ties with the studios if they don’t meet those demands, people say.

Toho Co., the parent company of Toho Cinemas, said the company would cooperate fully with the FTC’s investigation.

Toho Cinemas operates 677 screens in 72 theaters across Japan. It earned 161,893 million yen at the domestic box office with 114,818,000 visitors last year, according to the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan Inc.
