A popular Ukrainian rock singer says he is calling for peace in Ukraine by offering the Russian people “the truth” about the invasion on social media. He also asked Japan for its continued support.
Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, lead singer of Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy, made the call in an online interview with NHK.
The 46-year-old musician is well known in Russia.
He said the situation in Ukraine is very serious and bombs, rockets and missiles are being launched indiscriminately. He says he saw many wounded soldiers and civilians in the hospital.
Vakarchuk said that to stop the war, it is important for the Russian people to hear the truth and protest against the conflict.
He pointed out that Russians have limited access to information due to strict censorship in their country.
That is why he sends information about the damage caused by the conflict to the world, including to Russia, via social networks. He said he would do whatever he could.
He went on to say that he was a huge fan of Japanese culture and that Japanese novelist Mishima Yukio was one of his favorite writers.
He expressed his gratitude to Japan for its support and asked that the country continue to offer it.
